Department-Wide Training Guidelines

In order to meet the needs of the public and in accordance with Department goals and Guiding Principles, Utah Department of Human Services is streamlining and targeting training department-wide to generate a variety of training opportunities to employees, ultimately resulting in well-trained, credible and committed employees.

Utah Department of Human Services has implemented the following guidelines to ensure all employees have access to training events and opportunities department-wide:

  • A representative from the Executive Director’s Office (EDO) will identify and coordinate with key division employees/training contacts to discuss upcoming training opportunities, streamlining methods, and employee training needs.
  • Online training calendars will be developed and available on the employee webpage.

Three types of training calendars will exist:
  • Conferences/Advanced Training
      1. DHS related and/or sponsored conferences & advanced training sessions in the state of Utah. Registration fees may apply.
  • General/Human Resources Training
      1. Basic DHS employee training offered statewide by Human Resources and various divisions. Registration is open to all DHS employees.
  • Division Specific Training
      1. Designed to meet specific division or certification requirements. Registration may be limited to employees of the division coordinating/sponsoring the training.
  • Training opportunities will be input/submitted as soon as the training contacts become aware of them. EDO will review all entries, maintain the calendars and send quarterly reminders (advising continued input) to the training contacts.
  • Identify and provide training opportunities that are applicable to multiple divisions and offices.  Examples include, but are not limited to, Social Security, Cultural Competency, Documentation, Customer Service, Professional Boundaries and Ethics, Worker Safety.
  • Coordinate conferences & advanced training sessions with other divisions whenever possible. Coordination may take place in many forms, to include but not limited to, DHS Training Coordination Group, committee meetings, personal notification or discussion, reviewing of online calendars, etc. Regardless of the form, coordination must take place.

  • The streamlining process is designed to be simple, targeting training opportunities department-wide, thus increasing staff awareness and avoiding duplication. Any questions pertaining to training coordination should be directed to EDO.
